The Optimist's Creed

Christian D. Larson was one of the greatest inspirational teachers that lived and have authored numerous books that are continuously bringing inspiration to many.  One of his greatest works was The Optimist Creed which he wrote in 1912 and is, I would say, very helpful in keeping any one motivated.

A Cheerful Giver

I admire my uncle’s wife. Well, I’m not really that fond of her at first because I had strongly disliked her due to her being “sosi.” Our family is the conservative type, too, and with her reputation of having numerous boyfriends and living-in with some of them, well, some of our relatives didn’t really like her for my uncle.

Their family is based outside of the country, but they always have a yearly vacation here in the Philippines that lasts for a month during their kids' summer break. Over the years of spending time with their family during their yearly vacations, I have grown to respect my uncle’s wife. I have learned to look past her being “sosi” and sometimes “kaartehan” and focus on what makes her so blessed in life – and that is because of her generosity and kindness. I remember asking my dad (who is somehow close to my uncle’s wife) of how their family is so well-to-do, like they never run out of money to spend. I mean, they can afford to take yearly vacations not only here in the Philippines but on other foreign countries, they can afford to buy expensive gadgets for their children and have them study at an international school and they even help a lot of their relatives with their financial needs, so I was just amazed of how they can all meet their needs and wants as well as the needs of others. I am really amazed of how she would just pull money out of her wallet without complaining. She is someone who wholeheartedly and cheerfully gives, and that is why I admire her so.

I saw in her life how true the philosophy “The more you give, the more you receive” is. When she gives to someone, I can truly see how her intention to help is true and that she is not bothered at all that she’s the one who always needs to give. When you think about, it doesn’t really matter if you’re always the giver because what you give will definitely come back to you. Like with money, you can always earn it back. And whether or not the people you’ve helped appreciate you for your generosity, it doesn’t matter that much, for God surely appreciates you and will definitely reward you for the kindness you’ve shown to others.

“Give to others, and God will give to you. Indeed, you will receive a full measure, a generous helping, poured into your hands – all that you can hold.” – Luke 6:38

Life-changing Beliefs

I always find it a blessing to listen to successful people who willingly share their knowledge and share the philosophies that helped them achieve success. A few months ago, I was very fortunate to have learned a couple of philosophies from one of the successful leaders in our business that is truly helpful to keep in mind especially in these trying times. I would like to share these with you in hope that these words-which our mentor lovingly calls “Life-changing beliefs”- will help you remain positive and hopeful at all times.

Problems are GIFTS.  In reality, we don’t see problems in a positive way because they are always viewed negatively. Problems are problems. They are the cause of our sorrow, anxiety and worry. But we must face the fact that they are an inevitable part of our daily existence. So what must we do? Change our attitude towards our problems. Think of the trials and challenges that we face as a way to strengthen our character, deepen our faith and as a way for us to gain more courage. After all, a storm doesn’t last forever – the sun will always shine.

There are no problems, only CHALLENGES.  A challenge is defined as “a difficulty which stimulates interest or effort.” Problems are difficult, but when viewed as a challenge, we are sure to overcome them. Why is that? We simply like the feeling of being challenged and proving the one who challenged us wrong. When we are challenged, we take it with pride and say something like, “Bring it on!” If some of the people we know believe that we’re a failure and likely to fail, well, are we going to let them win and prove that they’re right? Of course not!  Would we let a few disappointments overpower us and stop us from where we want to go and what we want to achieve?  Definitely not.  So that’s the beauty of a challenge. It gives us all the reasons to succeed and takes away all the excuses and the reasons to fail. We can do that, too, with all of our problems – we can succeed and triumph over them.

When we are faced with challenges, tell yourself “It’s Great!.”  Why is it great to have challenges? Well, it simply makes us a better person. We know that we have a thing or two to learn from all of the challenges that come our way. We may even be an inspiration to other people because of what we’ve learned from our difficulties. So, yes, it is great to be faced with challenges. Never forget that. :)

“Don’t wish it was easier, wish you were better.
Don’t wish for less problems, wish for more skills.
Don’t wish for less challenge, wish for more wisdom.” – Jim Rohn
